Bonneville High School Newsletter

February – March 2012

La carta de noticias

Dear Parents:

By this time you should have received your student’s report card in the mail.  Although the grades were posted correctly there was a problem with the way Power School calculated the GPA.  Please don’t panic if the GPA did not match the grades your student received.  By the time this letter arrives the problem should be corrected.  If you have any questions we welcome your calls and visits to the school.  If your student is struggling you should be receiving calls from our automated system.  Once each week for the rest of the semester a call will go out to parents if the student falls into the D or F range.  If you receive such a call please check Power School and then act promptly to contact the teacher.

Recent changes at the state level will change how teachers are evaluated here in Idaho.  The biggest change is the requirement that parent feedback be included in the evaluation process.  The state requirement takes effect for the 2012-2013 school year.  Our plan at BHS is to give parents the opportunity to offer feedback starting this year.  Although the information we collect will not be a part of the teachers’ evaluation for this school year, the feedback you provide will be given to the teacher for their review.

In the past some parents have brought their student with them to parent teacher conferences, this spring we are asking that all parents bring their student to the conference.  When you arrive you will receive the class schedule/grade report and a survey for each of your students’ teachers.  We will provide a location to sit down with your student and fill out the surveys.  After completing the surveys you can visit with the teacher and leave them the completed copy of the survey.  As you contemplate any feedback you might provide to the teacher, I urge you focus on those constructive items that you believe would improve your student’s experience at BHS. We will only accept surveys that have been signed by the parent.  During this visit your student should be able to explain in what they are learning and the grade they are earning.  It is our hope that students will assume the responsibility for their own learning as they become more involved in explaining how they progress.

Another important change is the requirement that all students take the SAT test as part of their high school experience.  The state has set aside April 18th as a day for all juniors to take the test.  On April 18th, only the juniors will come to school so we can meet the established test protocol required by SAT.

If you are the parent of a senior, I urge you to ask them how they are coming on their senior project.  We are at that critical point when they should be nearing completion.  Oral presentations will occur  the middle of April and all project requirements should be completed by then.

Thanks again to you the parents who continue to support BHS and your student.  We cannot do the job without your help.

 John Pymm, Principal
